I am lucky enough to live in Florida where flip-flops are a way of life and rare are the days when one has to hide their pedicure in socked-feet. As much as I love my boots I am happy I only get to wear them a few times a year. I swear, my feet have claustrophobia!

But as the winter months melt away a new crop of summer shoes appear everywhere! Leather, pink, beaded, metallic - you name it and it comes in a strappy, wedge or kitten heel. There are plenty of places to find the shoe that fits. Here are some of my favorite websites for cool kicks.

Piperlime has a variety of designers. If you hit a sale just right you can get some good deals but overall their prices are a little on the higher end. The best part is they offer free shipping and free returns on all orders regardless of how much you spend.

A great go-to site for edgy looking shoes is BC Footwear (seen above). There are not a ton of styles to choose from but their shoes have an urban-chic look that is sure to be the finishing touch to a casual outfit. They ship super quick and have excellent customer service.

One of the most diverse sites is Shoe Buy. They boast a plethora of brands and allow you to search by size, price, style...you name it! They tend to have discounts on almost every item and always offer free shipping and free returns.

The Red Herring

Have you ever driven by a store and said to yourself, "Hmm...that place looks cute. I need to pull in there sometime and check it out"? But the next time you pass you say, "next time I am going to definitely check that place out." Then the day finally comes when you steer your car in the direction of said cute place's parking lot and take those long awaited steps into the door. Now this is the moment of truth; you are either going to realize this place was better off as the fantasy you created it to be in your mind or it is totally going to live up to expectation.

Just a week ago I had the wonderful experience of one of these places completely exceeding expectation. For some time now I have driven by The Red Herring on Bay to Bay and promised myself I would pull in next trip and when I actually set foot inside it was only a matter of seconds before I was cursing myself for not pulling in sooner! It was love at first sight. My trusty shopping companion and friend, Kara, was there to share my new home decor heartthrob. We both stood in the doorway, awe-stricken for those first few moments. This was the place we had been searching for! We giggled with excitement like 5 year olds then began to dive into all the treasures.

As you are visiting The Red Herring you cannot help but be inspired by all the unique and beautiful items owner, Deborah, has collected. She has an eye for all things fabulous when it comes to the home. There are so many wonderful pieces, from small accessories to handcrafted furniture, packed into this little bungalow-turned-store. She keeps a rotating stock off pieces she has collected from around the region, so you have to check in often to see what's new...and once it's on the floor it does not last long! Not only are Deborah's prices very reasonable, she is more than happy to offer advice on decorating. Her no-pressure, friendly presence tops off your shopping experience.

So two hours and a few dollars (more or less) later, Kara and I were on our way home with what we considered huge scores. Her with a beautiful wooden cabinet and an amazing red bench. Me with an antique medicine table (pictured here) to be used as a night stand in my bedroom. The entire drive home all we could talk about is going back again!

Local Store Review: Magnolia

I always joked that if I had some seriously deep pockets I would probably redecorate my house every 6 months. Not to be wasteful, I would of course donate all my used furniture to needy causes. This would make the whole deal seem a little less ludicrous, right? I am one of those people who is not that easily attached to "things" so I can let them go without a second thought. (Just ask any of my girlfriends, they know how often I clean out my closet!)

But over the years I have started to gather a few pieces that I connect with more and can see myself having for years and years to come. I am learning to be patient and use a more critical eye. I am also learning where to go to be inspired and to find the things that I want to keep in my home as statement makers.

There is one place in town that always brings me joy and inspiration when it comes to home decorating. And I could have sworn I had written about sweet Magnolia before now! Maybe I did not know how to put into words how hip it is, but I will give it my best shot now!

Tucked away in a historical little building on the corner of Platt and Magnolia in Hyde Park sits the loveliest of home goods boutiques. Magnolia has a collection of furniture, accessories, garden items and everything in between to fill your home with style. The store has a very eclectic variety and even though it is not that large you can easily loose track of time when you are browsing in there.

Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and helpful. They always steer me in the right directions no matter if I am choosing a gift for a friend or something to jazz up my dining room table. A friend of mine recently referred me to HauteLook, a website that has constant sales on everything from clothes to make up to jewelery to kids clothes! This site offers some well known designers and big names along side some more obscure and up and coming ones. I was drooling over many things in a matter of minutes! No wonder my friend always looks so fabulous!

Once you sign up you have access to view which designers and items are on sale. The sales last a little over 24 hours so you have to act fast! To be fair, they give you a preview of what will be arriving soon so you can browse ahead of time. Isn't that thoughtful? This way you can avoid those impulse purchases and side-step buyers remorse.

Holiday Dresses for Less

As the holiday party invitations roll in so does, "what will I wear" syndrome. We all want to look and feel festive but we may need more than one dress to get us through all the events we have on the social calendar. Gettin' your glue on!

So it seems like this fall we are going to see lots of appliques, lace and embellishments for women's clothes. As I was thumbing through the j. crew catalogue I earmarked many pages with many girly tops. Both of these create a wonderful feeling of femininity and luxuriousness. As I took a closer look I realized that some of these adorable pieces could easily be created by any novice level crafter. Seriously, you do not need a sewing machine or fancy skills to DIY these three pieces straight from j. crew's collection of shirts.

Here is what you are going to need:

1. A very strong fabric adhesive glue. (Shop Tampa recommends Fabri-Tac.)

2. Approximately one half yard of sequin trim. (We are factoring in a little extra for insurance.)

3. Plain tank top or t-shirt. Either ones you already own that could use a face lift or ones you purchase for the sake of this project.

All of these items can be found at just about any local fabric store. If you do not have access to a decent fabric store you can always search online. Either way, all these supplies should cost around $20.00 total (unless you are buying new shirts). Here is how you are going to turn $20.00 into looking like a million bucks!

This shirt can easily be recreated! All you need to do is cut your sequin trim to fit the neckline of the shirt you are using. Then simply glue it in place using your fabric adhesive. Follow the directions on the bottle of adhesive that you bought for any special instructions such as how long it needs to dry.

Now that you have mastered gluing sequins to a neckline it's time to go for the stripe down the front of the shirt! You're feeling confident and ready to rock this look. The steps are going to sound familiar but there are a few more tricks when it comes to this one.

Cut the sequin trim to the length of the front of your shirt, except this time add an extra 1/2 inch to the total length. Before you glue the sequins onto your shirt fold the top if your trim 1/4 inch down and use your glue to secure the fold to the back of your strip of trim. Do the same at the bottom. Once this has dried you are ready to glue the whole piece onto your shirt.

So you have go the hang of it now! You can get as creative and sparkly as you like by gluing sequins wherever you see fit. How awesome are you? You just made two fabulous shirts with your own little hands and you look spectacular! Keep this do it yourself mind set for when you want to spice up your wardrobe but don't want to spend big bucks!

Sweet Tee 2.0

I may have mentioned on this blog before that I am a bit picky about t-shirts. All tees purchased by me must meet 3 criteria:

1. Great fit (to state the obvious).

2. Be made of yummy feeling fabric.

3. Have a little something-something extra so it's not too basic.

I have recently added shirts to my wardrobe from 3 fantastic websites that you need to check out if you are looking for a top that meets said criteria. I am crazy about all of them and my husband is starting to see a pattern of rotation since I am wearing them constantly!

First is Tee s for Change. These colorful tees are made from bamboo and come emblazoned with simple, inspirational messages such as, "today matters" and "laugh often." They have something for women, babies and men and come in short sleeve, tank top and long sleeve.

Next we have Peace, Love, Mom. There is clearly more narrow of a market here but these are great gifts for the moms in your life if you are not one yourself. They are stylish and cozy and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They are a little more on the pricey side, however, so cute that you can easily justify the purchase!

The final one was a little harder to come by. It is on Kate's Boutique which has a menagerie of adorable items, not just t-shirts! But in the women's boutique department you will find these artfully designed tops by Cutting Up. This shirt is great! It is so thin it feels like you are wearing pajamas all day. And if that won't keep a smile on your face I don't know what will!

Shops at Wiregrass

There is another mall in the greater Tampa area. On October 30, Wesley Chapel officially welcomed the Shops at Wiregrass to their hood. Located at the corner of Hwy 56 and Bruce B Downs Blvd, this new mall provides shopping to an area saturated with Super Targets, Wal-Marts and mattress stores.

Of course I could not help myself and made my way there on opening day. While I was pleased to see a Barnes and Noble and some new restaurants, I felt that overall Shops at Wiregrass was only a solid, OK. I hate to complain but this was a real...whaaa, whaaa. For the sake of fairness I will begin with the things I did enjoy.

As mentioned a bookstore and new cuisine to the area were welcomed with open arms. The outdoor openness of the layout is wonderful and was beautifully done. The play area for children is very nice and different. There are stores that I like (Macy*s, Pottery Barn, White House/Black Market). I wish there were more but that's all I got.

Now not to be a Debi Downer, but I must confess the areas where I feel Shops at Wiregrass fell short. There were no what I call "every day stores." By this I mean: Gap, Banana Republic, j.crew, Ann Taylor Loft, places where you can get things to wear in your every day life. Now while we could rely on Macy*s to possibly fill that void, their departments are really small. (I have seen kitchens bigger than their shoe department.) Aside from the tenant list there is the lack of easy access food and drink. No place quickly to grab a soda or little snack. With the exception of Juice Zone, all other places are either sit-down-and-be-served or wait in line, sit down and we'll bring it to your table number.

Just some thoughts from one shopper to another. But judge for yourself! Do not let my slight case of mall-snobbishness detour you from checking out the newest mall in the area...especially if it is a nice day outside!

Fiberologie

Have you ever walked into a fabric store and gotten a sense of happiness that can only compare to chocolate? The smells, the textures...you want it all and you want it now!

OK, so maybe that seems a little dramatic to some of you but trust me, this is the overwhelming feeling of joy I get when I see the patterns and prints of a fabric store. Each bolt brings its own flood of inspirations. Even if I am not sure what I would make with it - I want it! Because it evokes some sort of emotion that my life would be even more awesome if I had something, somewhere made of this incredible piece of fabric. Sounding dramatic again, huh?

Well, I felt you must first understand this about me before I shared with you a recent find near downtown St Petersburg. Fiberologie is a husband and wife owned fabric store that is in one word: kickass! They have sourced fashion-forward and whimsical prints that made this gal dizzy with decision making overload. How could I ever decide which to buy? When I was visiting they were preparing to go to market and bring back a truckload of new and wonderful things to fill their shop with.

Located in an old bungalow (could it get any cuter?) at 411 15th Ave N, in St Petersburg, Fiberologie will inspire the Project Runway wannabe in all of you. If you do not know how to thread a needle, never fear...there are many different classes offered on location. The owner, Karrie, also has a few pre-made items available for sale throughout the shop.

This is a must, a MUST, if you are in the market for something way sassier than your big warehouse fabric store can provide. Oh, and the best part: everything is reasonably priced. You will not be confronted with a yard of fabric ringing up at $150 when you check out.

You may not have as religious an experience as I, but I think you will see where I am coming from when you visit for yourself!

Farm Girl

Even though it may not feel like fall outside I am starting to get that feeling that fall brings. Maybe it was the start of football season or all the Halloween decorations popping up in stores, either way I am already yearning for comfy chunky sweaters and knee-high boots!

But this fall I am not just thinking about how great layered clothes look. This fall I am going to do something I have been telling myself to do for about 3 years now...shop at my local organic farm. What could be more fall than a harvest?!? Seriously.

For all my Tampa locals you can mark you calendars for November 2, 2008, 12 - 4:30pm. Sweetwater Organic Farms in Town and Country is having it's first open market of the season. This is a hidden treasure and really a neat place for all ages. The market is right there on the farm and many vendors from the area bring handmade goods such as soaps, candles and clothing in addition to all the fresh, healthy food.

If you are not in the Tampa area and not sure if your community has something like this, check out Local Harvest where you can search by city or zip code.

Not only is this a great way to celebrate the fall season, it is an opportunity to support your community. Here's to a happy harvest!

Old School

I am trying to determine at what age to cut myself off from shopping at certain stores. It has been many moons since I visited the "Juniors" section at Macy's but I am beginning to wonder what makes some other stores I frequent so different and more importantly, do I look like the woman in her early 30's who is still dressing like she is in college?

This was brought to my attention today when I was making a purchase at Ruehl and the young woman checking me out informed me that she was "so happy someone bought this dress." When I asked why, she said they had just put it on the floor today and all the associates hated it. Hmmm...not the greatest of sales techniques...but I digress. I took it in stride and informed her that maybe I liked it because I am older than all of them and not as trendy. With an almost disgusted look on her face she then informed me that she was not THAT young, she was 22. Might I point out that Reuhl was originally conceptualized to be in competition with Banana Republic and their demographics but has somehow morphed into Abercrombie II.

So as I went store to store I started to question - Am I too old to shop at (fill-in-the-blank)? This list of stores would include: American Eagle, Forever 21, Fossil and A&F. Well, I did go in all these places and complained to myself that the music was so loud it was giving me a headache. Let this be known as sign #2 that I may possibly be too old to shop in these places. The only thing that makes me feel any better is that there were women older than me in Forever 21 who are trying on some uber-spandex outfits. At least there is something to bring me comfort.

Even though I did make purchases at all of said stores it got me to wondering where it is that I can find what I am looking for and still look age appropriate. There is of course my standard Anthropologie, Nordstrom and j.crew as well as local boutiques. But let's be honest, I cannot entirely outfit myself in $90 tank tops and $200 jeans. There has to be some in between ground. Or am I just being too picky and over-analytical?

There is one more thing I feel I should confess. I met my husband for lunch at 5 Guys Burgers. So not only was I an old lady in kiddy clothes land...but I also smelled like a cheeseburger. Classy.

Top 5 Stationary Sites

How fun is it to get actual mail in your mailbox versus emails in your inbox? There is something nostalgic about receiving a handwritten letter or card. (Can you believe we live in an age where posted mail has become nostalgia?!) I hope many of you share in my joy of retrieving actual cards on my birthday or other special occasion. So here are my Top 5 Stationary Sites ( plus one more) to help you find your paper groove.

Stationary is a lovely gift, either to yourself or others. If you are so inspired you can even go to your local craft store and gather everything you need to craft handmade notes, invitations, etc. Either way...send a card along to someone this week. I would venture to guess that you will have just as much fun penning it as the recipient will reading it.

How to be a Thoughtful Guest

You have just gotten the invitation to your friend's latest soiree. You RSVP in a timely manner, choose a fierce ensemble... but how many of us consider an appropriate hostess gift?

This piece of etiquette seems to be forgotten by many party-goers as of late (myself included at times) but is a great way to show your thanks for the hospitality shown to you. Even if you are in a last minute rush you can swing in your nearest store and pick up a go-to gift of either; a bottle of wine, fresh flowers or dessert. However, if you have time to prepare in advance a well thought out gift will make your host feel very special and appreciated. Hopefully these ideas will get your juices flowing for some more personal and creative offerings.

Rule #1: Consider the Event
The gift you bring to a barbecue will differ from that of a cocktail party so think ahead as to what would fit the fete.

Backyard Cookout: Smoked Salts for flavoring the meat, a six pack of bubbles and little paper umbrellas to garnish drinks.

Dinner Party: A unique apron or set of dish towels. Stuff the pockets with a few wooden spoons and your Grandma's recipe homemade ravioli.

Cocktail Party: Order some custom paper cocktail napkins. You can have anything from "Pedro's Pub" to "Lydia's Lounge" printed to suit your host. For a very special occasion, buy some plain cocktail napkins and have them personalized with the monogram of your host.

Rule #2: Consider the Source
Think of your host and their taste. Bring something that suits their personality and will add pizazz to their event.

If your host is...

Fun-loving: Bring a board game for everyone to play once they've cleaned their plates.

A Connoisseur: Show up with a rare libation for all to sip with dessert.

Too busy to have fun at their own party: Have your camera in tote and snap shots all evening. The next day you can email your host with the night's memories or print them and drop them off in person.

Rule #3: Consideration
Just like Momma said, "mind your manners." Before slipping out be sure to thank your hostess for inviting you. You can even send the simplest of thank you notes saying something like, "I can't stop thinking about your homemade marinara. It was delicious!"

Invitation Decoded

Last night I accompanied my friend to Westshore Mall to help her find a dress for a wedding she is attending this weekend. The attire for the fete is "Black Tie Optional" which got us talking about why this category exists. Choose one or the other: everyone wears tuxedos and formal dresses or let them put on their regular wedding attendance attire! With "optional" being the operative word it puts party-goers in somewhat of a pickle (especially men). Do you want to be the only guy not in the wedding party that decides to get fitted for and rent a tux or the only guy who shows up in a suit?

So after some research, I discovered what is considered proper etiquette for guests invited to a Black Tie Optional event. I thought I would pass this along as many people I spoke with seemed to be confused or even clueless.

If you are male you options are two: tuxedo or suit. If you decide to go with suit it should be either black, dark gray or navy blue. If possible you should still wear a black tie or a very dark, solid tie.

If you are female you have slightly more wiggle room. While the overall feel of your dress should be formal you can go anywhere from cocktail length to floor. However, if you are attending with a date your degree of formalness should match. For example, if your date is in a tux your dress should be full length.

So there you have it. Never again shall you stare at the invitation and wonder what to wear. Just a friendly style tip from Shop Tampa to you!

Forever Glamtastic

I think it's safe to say that if you are a female between 12 and 40 you have stepped foot inside a Forever 21. Where else can you grab a cute top in under 15 minutes for less than $20? Many times thought of as "disposable" clothes because of the uber-affordability, Forever 21 is always packed and usually overwhelming to pick through even when you have all the time in the world.

In order to give themselves some street cred, Forever has launched a new online store called Twelve by Twelve. This is a step up from their world of trendy "going out" tops and striped knits. Instead, Twelve by Twelve has fashion forward pieces with a more refined finish. They have chosen higher-end fabrics and given the overall aesthetic a touch of glam polish. But wait, it gets even better! Everything is still affordable! No one item is over $100 and most are under $50. I am afraid this could become my new favorite place to shop online...as soon as I am out of these maternity clothes, of course!

Ready For Fall

If you are a local you know that the only sign of fall we have this time of year is change of floor sets in all the stores. Now all those tanks and flip flops that we are STILL wearing in our 90 degree weather are on deep, deep discount. All the swimsuits are being replaced with sweaters, corduroy pants and knee high boots.

I, for one, LOVE fall fashion and become extremely giddy when I see the landscape of the shop windows changing. But at this point it is a bit of a cruel joke. By the time we are ready to wear that great sweater we bought because we were afraid that our size would be gone by the time it became cold enough is now on sale for 50% off and stores are rolling out spring. So what to do?

The Cool Kid

If you are a Tampa local and have driven down south Dale Mabry lately you may have noticed a new kid on the block. In the former spot of women's boutique, M, now sits Seedlings. At first glance I assumed it was another children's clothing boutique but after I finally decided to peek in I was quite surprised with what I saw.

Seedlings is an innovative and remarkable store for children and parents. When I stepped inside I was not sure what to think but I instantly knew I liked being there. To the left were toys and books, to the right organic baby food and scattered throughout was baby/kid gear, bath products and great ideas for gifts. There is even a kitchen in the middle of the store where the owner plans on teaching parents how to make their own organic and healthy meals for their families.

The overall look and feel of the store is modern and inspiring. The toys are not your average plastic do-hickey but more of a throw back to classic wooden and handmade toys. My favorite, the wall of bath products for moms and kids, was stocked with natural, luxurious lines. Everywhere I turned seemed to have something I had never seen before. Had Seedlings opened a month sooner I would have been loading up the gift registry for my little bundle that is on the way!

The staff was very friendly and helpful. My friend and I were able to find gifts for friends' children as well as learn about all the store had to offer. If you have children: go! If you don't have children but know someone who does: go! If you want to find your inner child: go!

Unique Gift Ideas, Part 2

In this final installment of ideas to get your gears turning when it comes to giving a gift I have put together packages with a theme in mind. You can see how once you choose a theme it can become easy (and fun) to assemble your gift. The better you know the person the more ideas you may get based on their likes and dislikes. One of the most important things to remember when gifting someone is to make it about them! The flip side is maybe they will remember all your efforts when YOU are the recipient of a gift. wink wink! Even the thought of gift giving can sometimes bring on a headache. Especially when you want to make your present stand out more than the average gift card. Housewarming Gifts

Print take out menus from restaurants in their area. (Just visit different restaurant's websites and most have a printable version of their menu.) Compile them in a folder or binder and add personalized touches like ribbon or stickers to make it look less school supplyish.

Send them personalized stationary or a return address stamper with their new address. Try The Stationary Studio for some great designs.

Order premade, frozen dinners from places like Weekday Gourmet or Dinner Done. Bring them over in a cooler with a giant ribbon tied around it.

New Baby Gift

If you're artistic, head to your local paint-your-own-pottery joint and create a plate with the baby's name, birth date, birth weight and height. Personalized and handmade!

Westchase Boutiques

Known best for its Soccer Moms and planned communities, Westchase may not be the area you would expect to find some clever and unique boutiques. But recently I was in the area and spied some shops that rendered a definite pull-over-and-have-a-look. West Park Village Shops are located in the heart of the main community on Linebaugh Ave. When you pull into the Village Shops you will see a variety of restaurants and specialty shops. For Shop Tampa there were two clear stand outs: Couture Designer Resale Boutique and mi bebe.

Couture specializes in new and "gently used" clothing and accessories for women. Their main pull is that they pack the store with plenty of high-end designer labels such as Prada, Dior, Fendi, Balenciaga and Chanel. The prices are really reasonable on the authentic items. (Yes, there are some imitation bags and sunglasses but they are very clearly marked as such, so buyer need not really beware...just make sure you know which you are purchasing.) The clothes were in good condition and well merchandised with a variety of sizes and even some good sale prices! Super-steal items spotted by Shop Tampa:

So one of my favorite local spots is having an end of season sale: Suitcase!
Get in on the 80% in savings starting July 10 and ending July 14.
The owner, Lori, is clearing out her stock, closing for a few weeks and reopening at the beginning of August with a new crop of couture that will be hot off the sewing tables.

So if you want to save a bundle on some great designer stuff, rev up the engine and be there on Tuesday. If you prefer the newest of the newest new then mark your calendar for August and be there for the reopening!

Ever been surfing the internet and stumble across a great site that you just have to share with your friends? Well, that is what happened to me today. Except there are THREE great sites and YOU are all my lucky friends whom I get to share them with. Each site has something unique to offer that you definitely will not find in local stores.

For those of you who like handmade accessories check what Amy Bengtson is carving out! She has crafted beautiful necklaces and earrings out of wood and precious metals. Somehow she has managed to start with what most people would consider bulky (wood) and transform it into a delicate work of art. Prices are good considering she is an independent seller and the quality is great.

This is one of my favorite Amy Bengtson pieces. ($120)

If you are a little on the funkier side browse the creations of Crazy Dreams Studio. The accessories are fun and very affordable. Once again, these are handmade and have quite a flare for the girl who wants something no one else will be wearing.

Modishoppe is made for the person who likes the vintage look but doesn't want to spend the time digging through the vintage and thrift shops to find that diamond in the rough (read: me). There is a store tucked into an obscure corner of historic West Tampa that is well worth your time. Maybe you are like me and passed it a few times before deciding to stop in. But if you haven't pulled over to the parking lot yet, put it on your list!

Baker & Co. is more than a General Store. It is full of old fashioned goodies, unique items and tons of charm. Located just south of Columbus Ave at 2502 N. Howard Ave, you will pull up to a beautiful old two story brick building. Once inside there is loads of treasure lining the walls. You can wander around and loose track of time; as a matter of fact, you will feel you have been transported back in time.

Baker & Co. is divided into 3 entities: The General Store, Town Hall and Victoria's Parlor.
The General Store is stocked with everything from old fashioned candies in giant glass jars to handmade soaps to antique furniture to retro apothecary remedies. There is something for all ages. This is a great place to find unique gifts for those hard-to-shop-for people in your life.
The Town Hall is a mid-sized room available for party and event rental. It opens to an outdoor area making it a nice place for about 50 people.
Victoria's Garden is an elegantly decorated apartment which is also available to rent for special events. It is set and ready for a tea party or luncheon and is so spectacular you will not want to leave. The best part is entering through the "Secret Garden" upstairs which completely makes you forget you are in the middle of the city.

Go by and see what this local gem has to offer. The staff is super-friendly and very helpful.
Mind the hours and don't get burned on a Monday as I did.

Beach Blanket Beauty

Why is it that every time I go to the beach I want to reinvent my style in the image of a surfer girl? There is something to be said for the ease with which you can toss on a sundress over a sandy bathing suit and feel sexy. Or allowing the ocean to twist your hair into a wavy do with no need for product. Unfortunately, this is not a skill I have mastered. I usually end up feeling more sticky than sexy and my hair looks more birds nest than surfer-chic.

However, there is a way to fake the look with confidence. The process is simple but the results are grand. Let's start from the top down, shall we?

The Hair:
Before hitting the sand run a dollop of conditioner through your locks. This will create a barrier from the water and keep your hair from feeling like straw at the end of the day. Any conditioner will do really, but the thicker the better. Shop Tampa recommends Hydrate Condition by Pureology.

The Outfit:
Who says that your beach cover up has to be made of that gauzy, sheer material? Go for something fun and easy with a cotton sundress that just slips on over your head. You need not spend lots of dough, remember this is go to be covered in sand and sunscreen. Try Forever21 for inexpensive dresses that you can toss straight into the washing machine.

The Accessory:
What beach trip would be complete without a bag to tote all your gear? Once again, this is going to get ugly (and sticky) so save that Bottega Veneta for your dinner date. Shop Tampa's go to beach bag stop: Target!

It seems that with our busy lives the convenience of online shopping becomes more and more alluring. A plethora of websites seem to be popping up that can meet many of our shopping needs. You can visit one website and literally browse everything from dresses to underwear.

Take for example shopstyle. This site allows you to see the hottest items for men, women and children in one swoop. They serve as the liaison between the shopper and the stores. For example, if you choose to view men's blazers you will see a selection from many different stores and if you choose to purchase one you will be forwarded to that store's site. Latest and Greatest Blurb

In case you haven't heard, the megastore Ikea will be opening in Tampa. Mark your calendar for 2009 when the affordable home goods mecca will open it's doors to our eager community. While it may seem like a bit of a wait, it will be well worth your patience.

The store will call Adamo Drive (on the border of Ybor and Channelside) home and bring some 400 jobs to locals.

If you have never visited an Ikea you are in for a treat. You can outfit your pad without busting the seams of your wallet and still feel like you are ahead of the game with style.

Down Home Goodness

Shop Tampa has been taking the road less traveled this week. There are so many hidden treasures that for the most part are only known by word of mouth. Well, I am happy to be one of those mouths spreading the good word on Downtown Dade City.

If you are an antiquarian or small town wanderer you may have paid a visit to Dade City. Only 40 minutes north of Tampa it is an easy day trip with lots of small wonders. It is so quaint and chocked full of down home goodness you feel like you may have time traveled to the 1950's. The main strip is lined with antique stores, vintage shops, boutiques, bakeries, tea rooms and garden shops. There is a lot to see but you can park centrally and walk all around downtown with ease. My recent trip there left me mesmerized by one store in particular: Sandbar Market.

Among the many vintage/antique shops, Sandbar Market was a stand out. The store is somewhat divided into distinct sections: home decor, garden and children's couture. The overall feel is very shabby chic and the prices are reasonable. Peaceful music was lingering in the background as I wandered the wonders from the past and present.

My favorite finds:
1. Three old horseshoes welded together with hooks added on the front. (Put by the front door to hang keys on.)
2. A garden fountain constructed of 8 buckets and ceramic planters.
3. Large glass apothecary jars filled with soaps and flowers.
4. An used door and crate repurposed as a small bench with with overhead shelf and coat hooks (Pottery Barn-esque, but better!).

Where Coolness Abides

Some times the greatest stores pop up in the strangest of places. Shoppers of Tampa, that is why I am here for you. I will joyfully sift through the Bay Area doing all the leg work to make your shopping journey a breeze.

Unless you live in the suburban madness that is New Tampa/Wesley Chapel you may not have heard of The Urban Suburban. This store is tucked into a seemingly average strip plaza with your usual suspects: Publix, nail salon, Office Depot. Yet when you cross it's threshold you feel as if you have been transported into a dimension of coolness.

The Urban Suburban has unique furniture and beautiful accent pieces which incorporate a fresh and fun perspective on design. You will immediately start dreaming of where these pieces can fit at your abode. If you are feeling girly, they even stock the shelves with aromatic candles and bath products.

If you don't live in the area but are looking for that finishing piece to make your house a home I recommend you make the drive!

Faded Glory

Good ole Ybor. First she was a maven for Tampa industry, then she was scary, next she was so uncool she was cool, then she was was born again and now...she's lost her identity. It's so sad that a place which oozes such history has such a lame shopping scene. Many great stores have come and gone and the only ones left really worth the trip are La France and Urban Outfitters. Both of which I visited last night.

La France is the epitome of vintage chic. Their finds are in outstanding condition and 100% authentic. Hours will slip through your fingers while you wander their jewelery cases. You will feel the stories of the garments as you work your way through the racks. If you have never been there you need to make a point to visit. Fun Fact: they are opening a sister store down the street which will sell antiques, furniture and collectibles.

Urban Outfitters is the mecca for hipsters (much younger than myself, but I still shop there) who want to show that they have an edge. While I sometimes think this store and their staff tries a little too hard, I have to say that last night was a very pleasant experience. If you are in the market for kitch, clever slogans on t-shirts or retro to the remix than this is the place for you. Everything old is new again at UO. I will say that they have some killer clearance sales where you can find many things for $5.00 to $10.00. Also, they always have interesting books and gift items. If you are down there you should stop in.

Treasure Chest

If you have been to the shops at Hyde Park Village in the past year you may have noticed some turnover. Smaller, privately-owned boutiques have come and gone and it seems only the anchor stores are surviving. This is a sin and a shame. Not only do we loose great spots on our shopping map but the lack of business in The Village may cause the larger stores' corporate headquarters to close their locations. A few of these spots are nowhere else in the area and it would be a huge hit to the shopping lifeline should they depart. Take a look at the treasures this open air shopping destination has to offer.

Restoration Hardware is the last one standing in this area. While I realize you must have a hefty bank account to buy their furniture, they carry so many affordable things that you can't find anywhere else. Let's review the strong points of this destination. Their paint goes on beautifully and stays true to color; for Christmas they have an array of unique stocking stuffers; they stock a variety of vintage cleaning and decorating items; their candles and home fragrances smell heavenly.

Then there is Anthropologie. Now, I could easily go on in length about my love for this store but I will do my best at brevity. From the moment I visited Anthropolgie in Santa Barbara, CA, it was love at first sight. So you can imagine my elation when I heard there was one opening my backyard! I have been a faithful devotee since their opening. They make it easy for you to be the hippest chick in town with their outstanding and creative merchandising. Upon entering you are filled with inspiration and good vibes. Their apparel has a clear aesthetic but if you are open minded you can mix a more statement type piece with jeans or another basic from your closet. The other half of the space is dedicated to home decor and accessories. They have everything from candles to doorknobs to towels. No matter who you are there is something for the girly-girl inside you. Make sure to mark your calendar for early June when they host their giant store wide sale! It is a MUST! And for the more funky punk in you check out their sister store, Urban Outfitters, in Centro Ybor.

A few other HP spots that you won't find anywhere else in the area:
Georgettes- good stop for fancy shmancy dresses and shoes.
Pottery Barn Kids- see all the things that you like in the catalogue in person
Barks in the Park- for the urban chic pooch

The older I become the more often I find myself at baby showers. This has led me into the formerly uncharted territories of shopping for children and mothers. For those of you who may already be a parent or, like me, hang with lots of parents know that baby items equal big business! Now anyone can drive into a Babies R Us and find a bib or blanket but there are some great specialty stores in the area with great alternatives to your everyday.

If you're in the market for fun, fashiony children's apparel head to Giggle Box Couture. It is located at 3211 W Bay to Bay Ave in the plaza with Bean There. They have clothes for boys and girls infant to toddler and I am here to tell you if they made these threads in big girl sizes I would be there frequently. Don't be afraid to bring the tots along ---there is even a play area for the kids to chill while mommy shops!

If you need stylish decor for baby's boudoir get on down to Little Peeps (2221 S Dale Mabry Hwy). They have many vendors which are hard to find anywhere else in the area. It is merchandised very well; you can see how to pull together everything from a nursery to a shower gift.

Word of caution: these things are so cute they may tempt you to have a baby just so you can buy the stuff!

Shoes Blues

Since I haven't had much luck with apparel lately, I thought it would do me good to venture into the land of shoes. So I took a trip to the mecca (Nordstrom) and the discount mega store (DSW). Both had lots to offer a girl and her newly pedicured feet. Wedges, peep-toe, strappy heels...I love them all!

However, I recently made a vow to myself on the subject of shoes. That was: don't buy just because they are on sale. I have burned myself with this move many times and I am done. I mean, the shoes would seem cute at the time and I would think, "what a great deal, I can't pass this up." But then they sit in the closet for months, never leaving the comfort of their manufacturer's box. Eventually, they would end up being donated to the local women's shelter.

So now I find myself being uber-picky and over analytical of each shoe. Will it go with what is already in my closet? Are they too trendy? Are they going to take me from season to season? Are they constructed well enough? Arg! Talk about zapping the fun out of the shoe experience.
It appears that I have the bar set really high for shoes...maybe a little unrealistic.

There is one more store in my quest for footwear where I always seem to strike gold. It is a local joint and a hidden treasure. Locals, take note: MJM Shoes in Brandon on Hwy 60. Not as glamorous as some stores but they have brands galore and great prices to boot! I will be heading there soon.

Shop-A-Dox

Yesterday I was trapped in the paradox of shopping. I am sure many of you have experienced a similar situation. Here's what went down.

(Backstory)My husband and I recently sold our old house (yay...only ONE mortgage!) and I had earmarked a hefty amount of change for new clothes. Sidenote: my shopping habit has taken a beat-down during this spending pinch.

So after work on Friday I head off to one of my favorite places, Anthropologie, and after an hour of trying things on I leave with one shirt. Now, if I had strolled in there during my spending freeze I would have found 200 luscious items to covet. Why is it when you have the money to spend, you can't find a thing you like? This is what I call the shopping paradox. Shop-A-Dox, if you will. It is a wicked happening and I am searching for an answer. Is it the psychology of the situation--- wanting when you know you can't have or believing nothing is good enough when you have the means?

Frustrated, I headed off to International Plaza thinking that some store, some where, would satiate my need. I went in almost every store with women's apparel and changed clothes so many times I lost count. But, alas, all I left with were aching feet.

Local Store Review: Suitcase

If you feel you need to add an edgy, unique piece of clothing to your closet- look no further than Suitcase. Located on S Dale Mabry, across from Plant High School, it sits in the San Miguel Plaza with Smoothie King (and other stores that are of no consequence...oh, and maybe an Asian Restaurant). Upon arrival you will find an array of great designers that are not easy to come by in the Tampa area. Well known labels like La Rok, Charlotte Ronson and James Perse in addition to smaller independent labels that the owner, Lori, has introduced to Tampa. The entire store is oozing with fashion-forward pieces that you are not going to see another soul wearing at your next social gathering. While there is a very clear urban-chic aesthetic going on there, all fashionistas should be able to find something that delights them. After indulging in the racks of couture you can browse designer shoes or jewelery and home goods created by local designers.
Side note: I took a friend with me to their grand opening party and she has been addicted ever since!

I just purchased a great Anna Sui top there as a birthday gift to myself and I must say I am in love! The best part: it was under $100.

Shop Tampa may be a deceptive name for this blog at the current time. I should change it to "shop web" until I have more time to dig into the local shops. There's nothing quite like the comfort and ease of a good t-shirt and a great pair of jeans. It has been the classic go-to outfit for decades. The Good, The Bad and The High-Waisted

There are some people who try so hard to be anti-trend just because they don't want to be thought of as "trendy." They will go out of their way to wear something different and claim to be pioneers of style. I am not one of these people. While I do not think that everything to hit the runway is for me, I enjoy wearing things that are fresh and current. However, I also think we should each put our personal stamp on a trend should we choose to try it. There are just too many fashion temptations each season to turn up your nose, so let's indulge, shall we?

Of all the Spring fashion trends headed our way this year the one I am dreading the most is the high-waisted bonanza. Pants, skirts and (the worst of them all) those BELTS up high around the waist...I don't know if I can take it! Unless you are Katherine Hepburn, your trendy high-waisted pants are most likely going to look like "mom jeans" with pin stripes. I implore you not to purchase these! The belt-over-the-outfit look I am pretty much numb to by now. Every mall girl from here and back have worn that look ragged. The skirts are the least of the evils, and I will concede, can be cute when done right.

Now, enough with my complaining, let's talk about the fun trends that are going to be surfacing everywhere. If you like the sparkle, you're going to like what's in store for the coming season.

Music vs. Milky Way

I was having a conversation with my friend today about the amount of cotton shirts she owns. She claims that she is in a shopping rut. It sounds like this: each time she buys a new shirt it is inevitably close or identical to something she already owns. She is frustrated. She feels as if she is a "boring dresser." This conversation got me thinking about a dilemma I recently had while cleaning out my closet.

I was in the process of tossing clothes, bags, shoes and the like when it hit me: my style is as scattered as my iPod songlist. I do not fall into one category. There is an equally eclectic sampling in my shopping habits as in my music taste. It made me realise how much what we listen to can influence what we look like. In addition, as my taste in music has evolved, my fashion choices have followed suit. So what is my friend listening to that is making her buy only cotton shirts?

However, there are two people who would argue that rather than your music choices, it is your astrological sign that determines what you purchase and how you wear it. I recently learned about the Astro Twins and their website www.astrostyle.com, where you can find out what to wear based on when you were born. I guess I can blame my denim obsession with being Aquarius.

Mall Rat

Well, as much as I do not want this blog to be about "the mall," I have to admit I am feeling some mall stores this week! I popped in International Plaza to grab a birthday gift and wandered into Ruehl. Now, I need to note that I had (in my head) sworn not to shop here anymore and I'll tell you why. WARNING: If you are not in the mood to hear a short rant, then scroll down now!

They are owned by Abercrombie, who initially added Ruehl to their Abercrombie/Hollister family with concepts parallel to the Banana Republic/Gap/Old Navy trifecta. Ruehl was created to appeal to the Banana Republic type demographic and when it first opened it was representative of that aesthetic. However, it has become Hollister-equse featuring shorts with 1 inch inseams and thin tanks in every color and print imaginable. Very predictable and very Seventeen.

However...they do have a killer sale on now to clear out there winter stuff (see: mental note post). I walked out with 3 sweaters for $41.00. Inconceivable! Most of the clearance is winter but there are some tanks (go figure) and pants that can go year-round. It's worth a stop if you're there.

While we're on the topic of end-of-season sales....there is a great boutique, penelope t, hosting a 3 day sale (January 24, 25 and 26). They have some great labels and a super friendly staff! North Star

So all of those who live up the north way in Tampa know that there is a lack of hip, trendy, chic or otherwise exciting boutiques. If you crave the stylish stuff that many South Tampa boutiques offer but don't have time to make the drive, look no further than The Pink Cabana. Located at 14361 N Dale Mabry Hwy, it is easy to access for last minute gifts, outfits, cards or accessories.

They have a good variety of vendors including: Juicy Couture, Lacoste, Lilly Pulitzer and Vera Bradley. They carry clothes and accessories for women and girls as well as some home decor.
